Device Drivers
Drivers are pieces of software that interface between the operating system and a hardware item. New hardware is being developed all the time, and the initial Windows installation disk cannot possibly contain every driver for every piece of hardware out there... so drivers for new products (and updates for older ones) can be downloaded from the internet and installed on your computer.
An out-of-date driver can give you lots of grief with BSOD errors.
