"Your system does not meet the minimum requirements..."

When installing an update from Hewlett Packard, you may receive the following error message

Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update.
Update has been cancelled. (xxxx)

The HP site is not very helpful when it comes to determining the exact cause of this error. It suggests that the error is caused by:

  • the update requires certain hardware or software that is not installed on your computer (examples: keyboard replaced with a non-HP keyboard or Microsoft .NET software is not installed),
  • the computer does not meet a certain minimum hardware or software requirement (examples: 4 GB minimum memory, 200 MB free disk space, or .NET version 2.0 required and 1.0 is installed).
  • The software is already installed
The above suggestions, provided by HP, are mostly inaccurate.

Resolving this Error

The resolution of this error depends on the error code (the number in parenthesis at the end of the message) -

Error 9999: You do not have Administrator privileges. Or you do not have a "C:" hard drive. To resolve this, please log in as a user who is an Administrator. Alternatively, right-click on the program, and choose "Run As".

Error 9998: The wrong Version of windows was detected. For example, you may be using any version of Vista, when the update is requiring Windows 7. This may be a little frustrating, especially when upgrading an older PC/laptop to a newer operating system - HP may not provide the drivers for the newer O/S. If you are moving to Windows 8, most Windows 7 drivers will work... but this error 9998 will prevent you from installing the Windows 7 driver. The solution here is to download a new driver.  You can do this (for free) at http://driveragent.com/driverlicense
